The name Rotel has meant excellence in the design and manufacture of electronics for more than 60 years.
In the 1950s, Rotel founder Tomoki Tachikawa began importing from the U.S. and distributing Sylvania television sets throughout Japan. Since the voltage requirements were different in Japan than they were in the U.S., the Sylvania sets had to be converted for sale in Japan. The company, then called Roland, had to also provide repair services for the Sylvania televisions. This was the beginning of Rotel.
In 1961, Roland became Rotel, exited the television distribution business, and began designing and assembling OEM electronics for a number of companies. However, at the same time Mr. Tachikawa was increasing the company’s efforts to have their own brand name products. In 1973, one of the first efforts under the Rotel brand, the RX-402 stereo receiver, earned international acclaim. It was even named a Best Buy by Consumer Reports.
In 1982, the legendary RA-820B integrated amplifier won Rotel their first What HiFi? Magazine Product of The Year award. Many more What HiFi? Awards, as well as awards from other publications, have since followed.

In 1985, Mr. Tachikawa’s son Bob joined the company. Educated at the University of Virginia, Bob quickly became the face of the company, and reaffirmed Rotel’s commitment to high quality and no frills electronics. Rather than focus on features, which many companies did during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, Rotel focused on such meaningful things as overbuilt power supplies, quality and simplicity of circuit design, and the use of the very best parts available to go into their products. That focus and tradition carries on today.
In 1996, Bob Tachikawa’s nephew, Peter Kao, joined Rotel, and is currently president of the company. Rotel is still owned by the Tachikawa family, and, despite their continued growth and global reach, is still run like a family business. And their focus remains one of providing the highest quality products to music lovers.
Many of the Rotel components manufactured since the 1970s are still in service today. We have three Rotel pieces that are nearly 30 years old in our collection here, and they still provide satisfaction and work flawlessly.
Rotel offers a wide selection of digital front end products, true high-current Class AB integrated and power amplifiers, and full function preamplifiers. Even an FM/DAB+ tuner is offered. Their integrated amplifiers with built in streaming also feature high-current Class AB amplifier sections, not Class D amplifier sections, which is a rarity today.
There is something in the Rotel to fit the requirements of any situation, and many of these choices are priced below $2000.00.
