Ray Kimber was working for a sound and lighting company in Los
Angeles in the mid 1970s when the problem presented itself of noise
being picked up and transmitted by speaker cables in discotheques.
The noise was being caused by the lighting systems in the clubs
and by the fact that the speaker cables available then did not have
sufficient shielding to prevent the problem.
Attempts were made to cure the problem by running the speaker
cables through steel conduit. While this reduced the noise by
a measure, it also caused squashing of the fidelity of the audio
signal because of the interaction of the steel with the magnetic field
generated by the speaker cables themselves.
Mr. Kimber had the idea that if he were to counter-rotate the sets of
conductors in the speaker cables that it would cancel the magnetic
interaction the speaker cables were having with the conduit. Not
only did it do that, but it also reduced audible interference from
the discotheque lighting even when the speaker cables were not in
the conduit. It was this discovery which led to Mr. Kimber to begin
researching, testing, and refining that original design.

The result was a braided-wire speaker cable that not only rejected the
noise, but also allowed for the sound produced by audio systems to
sound better and more musical.
Kimber Kable was born in 1979 from this important discovery, and
today their products are still considered the gold standard for high
performance audio reproduction across the price spectrum. Kimber
Kable products offer true high value, and Ray Kimber’s work and
dedication to the audio hobby have made his company one of the
perennial leaders in the world of high performance audio.
