NSR Sonic Research Loudspeakers
John M. Tabernacki is a pretty interesting guy. He’s a musician, musical instrument designer and builder, railroad engineer, and most notably, loudspeaker designer and builder. In fact, his work with loudspeaker design and construction has captured the attention of just about everyone from international audio journalists to audio hobbyists.
I was introduced to John in 2007 by Greg Weaver of Positive-Feedback Online and The Audio Analyst. John had made a big hit with his Concerto D1 Reference at RMAF 2006 and was going to introduce his new Concerto D3 Sonata at RMAF 2007. Greg was of the opinion that John and I needed to know each other, and was perceptive enough to recognize that we could be, and should be, cooperating in our efforts.
After discussing the idea for some time, John and I decided that I would step outside my normal business model and represent his amazing loudspeakers as a retail dealer.
The leading-edge technology behind NSR Sonic Research loudspeakers.
John Tabernacki has been researching and experimenting with loudspeaker design for nearly 30 years. During that time he’s learned a few things about what makes a loudspeaker sound “right.” Building on those many years of research, John has developed a unique approach to crossover networks and has developed the Acoustic Projection Lens® technology featured in both the Concerto D1 Reference and Concerto D3 Sonata models.
Both NSR Sonic Research loudspeaker models are sealed box designs. NSR has developed its own enclosure parameters, essentially employing a tandem pull/pull motor system in a non-resonant/anechoic sealed box. Sonically, these enclosures, combined with the patented Acoustic Projection Lens® technology, are the genesis of a new, more fortified, and considerably more stable bass system. NSR loudspeakers can reproduce low frequency waves well below the threshold of human hearing, on into the subsonic spectrum, without waveform breakup. NSR developed the acoustic material used to line the loudspeaker enclosures that allow them to function as anechoic chambers, virtually eliminating box resonance. The yield is a crisp, distinct, and powerful bass wave spectrum not found in any other system known today.

The NSR Sonic Research Acoustic Projection Lens® is truly an instrument; one that re-directs sound from the transducer while trapping proportions of the wave. Through its painstakingly engineered shape and construction, it allows these proportions to be collected and redirected just as with the body of a guitar or violin. Finally, the Acoustic Projection Lens® is built in a fashion and size to optimize the resonance and project the same, in a correlated beam, without signal loss or waveform breakup.
The basic mean function of the Acoustic Projection Lens® is to redirect a propagated waveform composed of resonant frequencies spontaneously generated from the cone surface, and redirect these emissions in a stimulated spectral waveform through prismatic deviation. The transducer is a mechanical diaphragm reacting to electrical impulse that reacts according to its physical makeup. The diaphragm cannot correlate frequencies and deliver a spectrum of separated, distinct resonant frequencies.
The net product of implementing the Acoustic Projection Lens® technology is a blend of frequencies, reminiscent of white light. All the colors of the spectrum are contained in white light, but are not distinct as a result of spontaneous generation. But through prismatic deviation, the frequencies contained in the white light being redirected and deviated, are correlated and distinct. The frequency emissions contained are now regenerated in a stimulated spectral array.

NSR Sonic Research employs its own proprietary, handmade 24 or 12 dB per octave crossover networks, based on proven Linkwitz Laboratories filter design. NSR does not use Zobel networks or notch filtering in its advanced crossover networks. Both are simply Band-Aids, and as such, are undesirable in a correctly designed crossover.
NSR Sonic Research’s proprietary crossover networks are hard wired in a symmetrical fashion without sharp turns. A smooth current flow path eliminates losses as opposed to coils and capacitors soldered to the thin flat pieces of copper tape on a circuit board. Circuit boards are quick and easy, but losses in the signal path are evident. Solid core wire, bound to thin flat tape and back to wire, along with all the sharp turns, creates improper and unbalanced current geometry. Current cannot squeeze through a maze of filters and then rebound. The losses sustained from this manipulation are clearly audible.
The Concerto Series D1 Reference: Musical reproduction without boundaries.
Simply put, the NSR Sonic Research Concerto Series D1 Reference loudspeaker creates the most amazingly accurate sound field that you will ever hear. After listening to this loudspeaker, everything else will sound like it has one note bass.
Combine that with the most fully-fleshed midrange and delicate highs that you have ever heard, and the Concerto Series D1 Reference is truly a reference-level loudspeaker.
